Tara Haelle’s ‘Straight Talk’ on Science, Medicine, Health and Vaccines

Business magazine Forbes regularly features a column by freelancer Tara Haelle. The column goes by the slogan, “I offer straight talk on science, medicine, health and vaccines.” The phrase “straight talk” gives the impression that the brand of writing is independent, balanced, and well-informed—which would suggest a minimal level of editorial bias.

During the past eight and a half months, Haelle has written nearly 60 articles in Forbes. Thirty-seven of them have had to do with vaccines, including her last one—”Gardasil HPV Vaccine Safety Assessed In Most Comprehensive Study To Date” on July 15, 2015.1

It’s a long list, but it’s worth listing to get a sense of both the degree of Haelle’s journalistic lean and the magnitude of her unusually special interest in vaccines, given that Forbes is a business publication, not a health one.  Prior to her current piece, Haelle wrote:

  • “First Confirmed U.S. Measles Death In More Than A Decade” (July 2, 2015)2

An occasional piece on vaccines is understandable, given the pharmaceutical product’s financial relevance to the most profitable industry in the world.38 But 37 articles since the beginning of November 2014? That works out to an average of 4-5 articles a month on vaccine-related themes.

Note that it is clear by the article titles that Haelle is extremely pro-vaccine—which is neither unusual nor surprising. What is unusual is how prolific Haelle is on the topic of vaccines. And when you read the articles, it becomes quickly apparent that they sound almost like promotional pieces, as if someone is trying to sell you something. This is troubling, particularly in light of the move last year by Forbes‘ parent company, Time, Inc., to expand its use of “native advertising” (also known as “advertorials” or “sponsored content” or “branded content” or “in-feed sponsored content”).39

Perhaps the most succinct explanation of native advertising comes from Ken Auletta, a contributor to The New Yorker…

Native advertising is basically saying to corporations that want to advertise, we will camouflage your ads to make them look like news stories. That’s essentially it.41

Time, Inc. CEO Joe Ripp announced in July 2014 that he would be creating an eight-person team to focus on developing native ads. In a staff memo from the company’s chief content officer Norm Pearlstine and executive vice president Mark Ford, it was revealed that the “Native Group” would work “side-by-side with editorial staff.” 39

The ads, which are designed to closely resemble editorial content, have come into criticism from editorial purists, but with the native ad business projected to grow 23 per cent this year Ford insisted: “We’re not trying to trick people. We’re just trying to create great content.”39

Ripp, formerly President and COO of Dendrite International,40 a computer software provider to the pharmaceutical industry, doesn’t have a problem with native marketing, “as long as it’s clearly marked, as long as the consumer knows the difference between what’s editorial and what’s native… “41

Therein lies the problem. In an online study conducted last year by Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and Edelman Berland, it was shown that “general news” audiences have trouble distinguishing native advertising from real editorial content.42

Native advertising is the new wave in media, especially the print variety, because of falling revenues from advertising sales. Major media sources such as Time, Inc. (which also owns TIME, People, and Sports Illustrated), The New York Times, and The Washington Post, as well as many other newspapers and magazines throughout the country are turning to the strategy in order to survive. But it has generated considerable controversy within the journalism profession. So much so, in fact, that Jill Abramson, the executive editor of The New York Times, was fired last year for her opposition to native advertising.43

This is not to say that Haelle’s vaccine articles are native ads. Only that they sure do read like them.

This is the new way to market, folks. You make it seem like it’s written by a journalist reporting information for the public. But in reality, it’s a behind-the-scenes paid hack that writes pieces for the sole purpose of promoting a product or ideal. It is clear that Tara Haelle is being paid by Big Pharma to promote vaccines. Her biased “reporting” is more than I can stomach.

Actually, it’s reporting, not “native ads.” Just because you don’t agree with the research does not mean that (a) the research is wrong or (b) that it is a paid advertisement.

I’ve read through every one of her articles. They are misleading and inaccurate. Look at this piece she posted:
“First Confirmed U.S. Measles Death In More Than A Decade”
The title of the article is misleading to start with. This frames how a person views the article contents.
The young women from Washington State DID NOT DIE FROM MEASLES. She died from PNEUMONIA. She also failed to mention the following information and ask some basic questions:
-The young lady in Washington State who died from pneumonia and the virus was discovered at the completion of her autopsy which showed she had the measles virus in her system. She showed no obvious symptoms of being infected which is quite common among people who are infected according to the CDC Pink Book. She was fully vaccinated and had protective antibody titers. Her mother did not need to be involved in looking for her vaccination record because the state health dept has that information on file. The mention that Mom couldn’t find the record was just a distraction. Give the Washington State Health dept a call. Fully vaccinated she nevertheless became infected with measles while seeking medical attention in a clinic. She died from pneumonia, which can be caused by any number of other bacterial or viral infections besides measles, including the common cold and flu. The reason her immune system couldn’t handle the infection was because doctors had her on immunosuppressive drugs. Hence, medical intervention was a contributing factor in her death.

Question that were asked by commenters on many website but never answered:
        -what are the PCR results?
-She didn’t have Genotype B3 (according to the CDC) the strain from California so it was a vaccine strain in her system, Genotype A.

Did she bother to check any other source except what the talking points from the CDC, because the remainder of the piece is pure CDC propaganda that they have been pushing for several years. Most of the time these PR people dont even bother to put the info in their own words. kinda like TV new networks that report on the same story on the same day/night that report across the country word for word.

A piece in The Seattle Times that the woman was in her 20s.
“The news of Clallam County over the past few months that the previous case—the fifth—of measles in that county involved a man who had been vaccinated against the disease. The other four measles cases in the county in February involved people who had not been vaccinated. These included a 14-year old boy (the fourth case) and his 5-year old sister (the second case), and two men ages 43 (the third case) and 52 (the first case). Two of the individuals involved in the first four cases are apparently related to the man in the fifth case.

According to Clallam health officials, both the fourth and fifth case individuals were quarantined during their infectious period, so they could not have spread the disease All five cases occurred at the same time there was so much national commotion over the outbreak of measles at Disneyland… which explains why the Clallam County Health and Human Services officials started issuing public health advisories urging people to get free shots of the measles vaccine (MMR) at local clinics.”

It’s possible that the 20-some year old woman (the sixth case) caught the measles virus from one of the other five people (although we know that at least two of those individuals had been quarantined). But it is also possible that the woman, who never actually developed measles symptoms, simply responded to local health advisories and drove over to a clinic and got her MMR shot, and that’s what the autopsy found was traces of the vaccine strain measles virus in her system. The Washington Health Dept. stated the virus was not the same as the Disney stain which was Genotype B3 so the Genotype of the virus she was infected with is Genotype A, but what number considering there are about 19-21 Genotype A strains listed on the CDC website. Remember, MMR is an attenuated (weakened) live virus vaccine, and those who get live virus vaccines can be infected with it. Also, given her immunocompromised status, had the young woman been given a Pneumonia vaccine recently? What is the Pneumonia strain found in her system?

“Measles was declared eliminated from the U.S. in 2000, which means it is not endemic, or no longer circulates on its own.”

Hold on. How do we know measles has been eliminated? The CDC -That bastions of truthfulness tells us that.
        – In 2000, the United States declared that measles was eliminated from this country. The United States was able to eliminate measles because it has a highly effective measles vaccine, a strong vaccination program that achieves high vaccine coverage in children and a strong public health system for detecting and responding to measles cases and outbreaks.

But there’s a little problem with this response. Read the question carefully again, and then read the answer… carefully. The CDC does not actually confirm that measles was eradicated in the US. It says that the US “declared” that measles was eliminated. It’s a nice lead-in to what amounts to a clever attempt at deception to make the public believe that the disease was essentially wiped out in 2000.

Anyone can declare victory. Hey, the US government declared victory in Vietnam. Doesn’t mean it was true. India was declared polio free in 2011. Gates foundation went in and gave the polio vaccine towards the end of 2012, by the end of 2012 India was still declared Polio Free BUT India also confirmed 47,000 cases of Non-Polio Acute Flaccid Paralysis-clinically indistinguishable from Polio but more aggressive. The number of cases were consistent with the number of polio doses given.

The CDC can declare measles was eliminated. You see, it knows how to declare the elimination, it just don’t know how to achieve the elimination. And that’s really the most important part of the elimination: the achieving. Anybody can just declare. Measles outbreaks since 2000 that have occurred in highly vaccinated populations:

-Study titled, “Outbreak of Measles Among Persons With Prior Evidence of Immunity, New York City, 2011,” http://cid.oxfordjournals (dot) org/content/58/9/1205.long This fully vaccinated young lady viral vaccine shedding resulted in her infecting 88 people. Of the 88 four secondary cases were confirmed that had either two doses of measles-containing vaccine or a past positive measles IgG antibody. All cases had laboratory confirmation of measles infection, clinical symptoms consistent with measles, and high avidity IgG antibody characteristic of a secondary immune response.”

-PLoS study: “Difficulties in eliminating measles and controlling rubella and mumps: a cross-sectional study of a first measles and rubella vaccination and a second measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination. China has one of the most vaccination compliant populations in the world. In fact, measles vaccine is mandatory. So why have they had over 700 measles outbreaks from 2009 and 2012 alone? “The reported coverage of the measles-rubella (MR) or measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is greater than 99.0% in Zhejiang province. However, the incidence of measles, mumps, and rubella remains high.” http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih (dot) gov/pmc/articles/PMC3930734/

-Recent California outbreak which is what prompted this paper, there were 133 lab confirmed measles cases reported in “California residents” read the opening line of the March 20th version of the California Measles Surveillance Update. March 13, 2015.” There were 41 cases directly linked to Disney, 50 are assumed to be linked to Disney and 40 exposed at Disney. Search of state vaccination records revealed that 86% of the people who were infected were “FULLY VACCINATED”. The remaining 14% had a mixture of 1 MMR shot, unvaccinated people and babies that were too young to be vaccinated. Over 60% of the fully vaccinated were adults.

-Vaccine Failure – Two Fully Vaccinated Doctors Get Measles (2009) A measles outbreak in 2009 exposed and infected two physicians, both of whom had been fully vaccinated with two doses of the MMR vaccine. These physicians were suspected of having been infected by treating patients diagnosed with measles. [5] http://jid.oxfordjournals(dot)org/content/204/suppl_1/S559.full.pdf+html.

-The largest measles epidemic in North America in the last decade, occurred in 2011 in Quebec, Canada, where rates of 1- and 2-dose vaccine coverage among children 3 years of age were 95%-97% and 90%, respectively, with 3%-5% unvaccinated.” “Among adolescents, 22% had received 2 vaccine doses. Outbreak investigation showed this proportion to have been an underestimate; active case finding identified 130% more cases among 2-dose recipients.”

Haelles engages in misinformation and misdirection-not revelant information. That information is:

        Dr. Gregory Poland:
The measles vaccine has failed, he explained two years ago in a prescient paper, “The re-emergence of measles in developed countries.” In that paper, he warned that due to factors that most haven’t noticed, measles has come back to be a serious public health threat. Poland sees the need for a major rethink, after concluding that the current measles vaccine is unlikely to ever live up to the job expected of it: “outbreaks are occurring even in highly developed countries where vaccine access, public health infrastructure, and health literacy are not significant issues. This is unexpected and a worrisome harbinger — measles outbreaks are occurring where they are least expected,” he wrote in his 2012 paper, listing the “surprising numbers of cases occurring in persons who previously received one or even two documented doses of measles-containing vaccine.” During the 1989-1991 U.S. outbreaks, 20% to 40% of those affected had received one to two doses. In
a 2011 outbreak in Canada, “over 50% of the 98 individuals had received two doses of measles vaccine.”

Failure to reach the goal of measles elimination. Apparent paradox of measles infections in immunized persons.
        Poland GA1, Jacobson RM.
Conclusion: The apparent paradox is that as measles immunization rates rise to high levels in a population, measles becomes a disease of immunized persons. Because of the failure rate of the vaccine and the unique transmissibility of the measles virus, the currently available measles vaccine, used in a single-dose strategy, is unlikely to completely eliminate measles. The long-term success of a two-dose strategy to eliminate measles remains to be determined. http://archinte.jamanetwork (dot) com/article.aspx?articleid=619215.

I don’t think you understand how Forbes works and pay freelancers into today’s current digital journalism market. They no longer have a big room of reporters on salary. This is journalism reporting new information, studies coming out so it is “news” on this topic. A journalist who develops expertise on a topic is of course going to write many articles in this topic area. That’s how they make a living — covering this beat. She does not get paid by vaccine companies. Those people are PR and marketing folks, not journalists who have Press passes and work through editors for major publications that still attempt to report the daily news. Forbes pays Tara Haelle, not the vaccine companies, based on a complex model of revenue per page views and other selected metrics — in other words, no traffic, no income. Your links to drive traffic to all her articles, literally pays her.
